How the Cold Weather Affects Your Vehicle

Brian Bates

Winter doesn’t just affect us -- it affects our vehicle too. With winter quickly approaching, we will be breaking out our scarves, jackets, and other cold-weather items. Just like how we are preparing for winter, our vehicle needs to prepare too. Cold temperatures can negatively affect individual components of your vehicle, which subsequently affect your vehicle’s performance.

We encourage you to bring your vehicle to our shop, so our technicians can thoroughly inspect the following parts of your vehicle and provide a little extra TLC if needed:

  1. Tires: When your tires are exposed to cold temperatures, the air in your tires will contract, which leads to your tire pressure dropping. Low tire pressure can result in poor traction and, even in difficult situations, tire failure pressure. Also, the chilly air can cause the rubber on your tires to harden, making it harder for your tires to gain traction on the road.
  2. Battery: During winter, we use specific electrical systems of our vehicle that much more, including our heater, defroster, and windshield wipers, which leads our battery to work that much harder. On top of that, the chilly weather slows down the chemical process inside your battery, making it more difficult for your battery to hold a charge.
  3. Fluids: The cold weather causes your oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze to thicken. Our technicians will make sure they are at the right levels. We also encourage you to let your engine warm-up for a few moments before driving off.
  4. Lights: Imagine you are driving on a dimly lit road, and your lights aren’t working. Your lights are your first line of defense against the elements, which is why our technicians will carefully and thoroughly examine your lights to ensure they are ready to go!

Let’s take care of your vehicle this winter. The entire team at South Park Tire & Auto wants you to have a safe and happy holiday. Schedule an appointment at South Park Tire & Auto with our technicians, and we will make sure your vehicle is ready to go for this spooky season! We are conveniently located at 8081 South Broadway, Littleton, CO 80122.
